WOMEN'S SOCCER NAMED 2007-08 NASSANEY MEMORIAL PROGRAM OF THE YEAR
SMITHFIELD, RI - After a 2007 season that saw the Bryant University women's soccer team roll to a program-best 17 wins and a No. 13 national ranking, head coach Chris Flint and his Bulldogs were named the 2007-08 Nassaney Memorial Program of the Year Award recipients.
The award, named in honor of Bulldog alum and track standout Shawn M. Nassaney, who was aboard Flight 175 on Sept. 11, 2001, demonstrates the continued effort to support the balance and development of the whole person through the Bulldog student-athlete experience.
In addition to the outstanding results produced by the 2007 women's soccer club on the field, the Bulldogs placed four players on the Northeast-10 Conference all-academic team and averaged a team GPA above that of the average of the Bryant student population as a whole.
A team that featured five all-conference and all-region selections, the Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year and a pair of First Team All-Americans, these Bulldogs were equally influential in the Student Athlete-Advisory Council (S.A.A.C) and in the community. The women's soccer team supported and was involved in such initiatives as cookbook sales, the LaPerche Elementary sideline reporters and the Nickerson Community Center Adopt-a-Family.
"We are very proud of our women's soccer program, and for this team to receive an award named in Shawn's honor is a fitting tribute to the excellent year they had both on and off the field," said Bryant Athletic Director Bill Smith. "I would like to thank Coni Fichera for all her efforts in running the CHAMPS/Life Skills program, as well as Pat Nassaney and the whole Nassaney family for all their generous support and contributions that benefit our student-athletes in innumerable ways."
Teams are awarded points for achievement in the classroom, participation in community service, participation in campus community events and serving as leaders in the community. The most well-balanced program each year, demonstrated by excellence in all areas of academics, athletics and community, receives this prestigious honor. The Nassaney Award, now in its second year, is presented in conjunction with Bryant's CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and supported by the Nassaney Foundation.
